FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

DO I NEED TO LIVE IN NORTH CAROLINA TO APPLY?

You do not need to live in North Carolina to apply for Public Allies North Carolina program. However, we advise you to strongly consider your personal financial situation before deciding to relocate for our program. Public Allies operates in 25 locations nation wide.

WHAT IS THE PUBLIC ALLIES NORTH CAROLINA STIPEND AMOUNT?

Public Allies NC's stipend amount is $1,500 per month ($15,000 over the course of 10 months, before taxes), plus other benefits including healthcare coverage, food assistance, and child care assistance. Upon completion of their 1,700 hours of service, Allies receive a Segal Education Award which is equivalent to the maximum amount of the federal Pell grant. As of October 2017, that amount is $5,920, but it is subject to change.

CAN I PARTICIPATE IN PUBLIC ALLIES AND BE IN SCHOOL?

Because Public Allies is a full-time, 10 month program, we do not recommend full-time students apply. However, applicants who are in school part-time, taking night classes, etc. may find that it works for their schedule.

DO YOU NEED A DEGREE APPLY?

You must have a high school diploma or GED to apply for Public Allies, but you do not need a post-secondary degree.

HOW DO ALLIES SPEND THEIR TIME?

Each Ally’s job description and weekly schedule is agreed upon by the Ally and their supervisor. Generally, Allies work 4 days per week in the partner organization office, and spend 1 day per week attending Public Allies North Carolina professional development training.
